Abstract
Purpose : We investigated the impact of undercorrected refractive errors on monosyllable memory with auditory stimulus in myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Methods : Sixty young subjects were participated and among them 31 were myopes (22.16¡¾1.32 years) with ¡Ã?1.00 D spherical power, and 29 were myopic astigmatism (23.04¡¾1.40 years) with ¡Ã? 1.00 D cylinder power and their mean spherical equivalent was -4.56¡¾2.49 D. The refractive errors were corrected using Trial spectacles frame (TLS-AF, Topcon, Japan) for full correction (FC), and SPU (-1.00 D spherical power undercorrection), CPU (-1.00 D cylindrical power undercorrection) and VO (visual occlusion) condition. The ability of memorization was measured with showing a series of non-regular monosyllables with no regularity at a distance of 4.5 m, while the recorded monosyllable voices were played at a constant speed with FC, SPU, CPU and VO condition, respectively.

Results : The number of memorized monosyllables with FC, SPU and VO conditions were 6.03¡¾ 1.87, 3.30¡¾1.42, 3.70¡¾1.79, respectively in myopia, and 6.11¡¾1.76, 3.81¡¾1.21, 4.48¡¾2.05, respectively in myopic astigmatism that the abilities of memorization with undercorrection of refractive error were lower than FC and similar with VO condition. In myopia and myopic astigmatism undercorrected, the abilities of memorization were not different with spherical errors and cylindrical refractive errors. In myopic astigmatism, the abilities of memorization were not different between spherical and cylindrical undercorrection.

Conclusion : In myopia and myopic astigmatism, the memorization ability with undercorrected condition was lower than fully corrected that correction of refractive error would be important to perform tasks requiring memorization ability efficiently.
